Sending monitoring alerts to a Slack channel is table stakes. Every monitoring tool does it. But most teams stop there, missing the opportunity to make Slack a powerful incident management hub.
Here's how to go beyond basic alerts.
Level 1: Basic Alerts (Where Most Teams Stop)
Monitor detects issue → Message posted to #alerts channel.
This is better than nothing, but has problems:
- Alert fatigue from too many messages
- No structure to incident response
- Critical alerts get buried in noise
- No escalation if nobody responds
Level 2: Smart Channel Routing
Route alerts to different channels based on severity and service:
- #alerts-critical — Payment failures, complete outages (SMS + Slack)
- #alerts-warning — Degraded performance, elevated errors (Slack only)
